Background.

I was born and raised in Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador. My career with Nav Canada began in 2005 in Cornwall. My current role is Product Requirement and Integration Specialist in Ottawa within the Air Traffic Management group responsible for working on IWP and DAATS.

Before this role I was Team Supervisor Wabush FSS, operational specialist, and a term in Gander as Regional Training Specialist. I was shop Steward in Wabush for ten years, during which time I was on the recreation committee and a member of the AAS Technology Working Group since 2017. This experience enabled me to attend union conventions, participate in mock arbitration and have a voice in the collective agreement. During my career I trained in ATC for almost 4 years. I trained and worked on the floor in Moncton high level and Fredericton Tower from February 2009 – October 2012. Throughout my career I volunteered to assist operational employees in any capacity. I was both a CISM and Thrive peer simultaneously for eight years. Some of the most rewarding experiences have been in providing help through these programs.

My wife Samantha, and I have two wonderful Children, Luke (8) and Claire (6).

Issues & Challenges.

On several occasions throughout my career, I observed conversations within our group about the concept of combining ATSAC with CATCA. I heard about a failed attempt in the past, that broke down due to seniority issues. Honestly, I have no idea if that happened or not. The fact that these conversations and stories are still being debated today has motivated me to run for president and ask this question to our collective:

Is amalgamation with CATCA something you want to explore? The union belongs to its members if this is something the members want, I believe it deserves examination.

Opportunity.

During COVID we all witnessed that times of change are times of great opportunity. Companies and organizations around the world seized on that moment to implement drastic changes within their organizations that could not otherwise be accomplished. The same is true of our group. With the transition to DAATS facilities, a major change in how and where we perform our duties is emerging. Within this change there is an opportunity for us to position ourselves for the future. Timelines presented by the company may seem far out now, but I assure you they will be here before we know it. If our group is to seize on this opportunity and use it to advance our interests for the future the time to start looking at that is now.

Items such as location, job classification, shared air space, procedures, job protection and training are becoming more relevant. As our two groups work closer together there will be new challenges as a result. Would we be better served under the same collective in that environment? Maintaining the traditional two union environment has afforded the company an opportunity to test and implement ideas and concepts on one group that can have consequences for both groups. Balancing items that require the cooperation and approval of two unions adds a layer of complexity when ultimately, we have the same goals; safety and to get the most benefits for our members.

I don’t know if the other union would be interested, and I don’t know if we are interested in it either. The first step is to gauge our members and then, if enough people support this concept, I would initiate the conversation.
Until then, there are pressing issues that require immediate attention, such as:

There is a knowledge gap that exists in my understanding of the unique and difficult challenges facing FIC and International specialists. I want to be honest about that. That is not to say I won’t work as hard for you as I do for AAS specialists. My career has leaned more towards Airport operations and that is something I will work hard address. I want to let the FIC and International specialists know this and be aware that it will be necessary for me to communicate more frequently with your groups to ensure I can represent you to the best of my ability.

We have made great progress within our collective agreement. That is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our current and past presidents, regional VP’s and all elected positions within our membership. As the industry, labour relations and our role within the air navigation system matures there appears to me to be a clear direction to attain the best possible value and protection for our time and work.

I am not running for president because I have a problem with how I have been represented in the past. I am running for president because I see opportunity for the future.

I can only promise I will do my best and work my hardest for our membership every day. I would carry out the duties of president to the best of my abilities. If there is a deal to be made on amalgamation, I will work to find it. If there is not, I will advise the membership.
